Tool Maker

The employee working as a Tool Maker constructs plastic injection molds to be used in the production of
plastic parts. The Tool Maker demonstrates solid mathematical and analytical reasoning skills, is adept in
the use of manual machining and precision instruments, and is schooled in relevant computer
technologies such as CNC machining.

Duties

 Machines parts to specifications, using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, and
grinders.
 Set-ups, adjusts and operates basic machine tools as well as specialized, advanced tools to perform
precision machining operations.
 Using precision instruments (e.g., micrometers), measures, examines, and tests completed units to
check for defects and ensure conformance to specifications
 Sets controls to regulate machining; enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine
control media.
 Uses knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining
procedures.
 Calculates dimensions and tolerances using mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and
vernier calipers.
 Aligns and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, or materials onto
machines.
 Selects the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work
