A Power Systems Generator Technician is a skilled professional responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical power generation systems, particularly generators and related equipment. This role requires in-depth knowledge of electrical systems, mechanical components, and control systems to ensure the continuous and reliable operation of power generators.

Key Responsibilities:
Generator Installation and Commissioning:
  • Perform installation and setup of power generators according to manufacturer guidelines and safety standards.
  • Conduct commissioning tests to verify the proper functioning of generators and associated components.
Preventive Maintenance:
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive preventive maintenance schedule for all power generators.
  • Perform routine inspections, servicing, and component replacements to prevent potential failures and downtime.
Troubleshooting and Diagnostics:
  • Respond to generator failures and malfunctions promptly and effectively.
  • Diagnose and identify electrical, mechanical, and control system issues using diagnostic tools and equipment.
Repairs and Overhauls:
  • Perform repairs and overhauls on generators, including replacing faulty components, rewinding coils, and refurbishing parts.
  • Coordinate with vendors and suppliers to procure necessary replacement parts.
Control Systems and ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch) Maintenance:
  • Maintain and troubleshoot control systems, ensuring seamless synchronization and power distribution.
  • Service and test Automatic Transfer Switches to guarantee reliable generator-to-grid transitions during power outages.
Safety and Compliance:
  • Adhere to all safety guidelines and protocols when working on generators and related equipment.
  • Comply with industry regulations, local codes, and environmental standards.
Documentation and Reporting:
  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, repairs, and equipment history.
  • Prepare reports on generator performance, maintenance schedules, and operational issues.
Team Collaboration:
  • Collaborate with other technicians and engineers to address complex technical challenges.
  • Provide support during emergency situations and disaster recovery efforts.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • High school diploma or equivalent (additional technical certifications or degrees in electrical or mechanical engineering are beneficial).
  • Proven experience as a generator technician or similar role, demonstrating hands-on knowledge of power generation systems.
  • Strong understanding of electrical principles, circuits, and power distribution systems.
  • Knowledge of generator control panels, PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), and associated instrumentation.
  • Proficient in using testing and diagnostic tools, such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and insulation testers.
  • Familiarity with generator brands, models, and maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical schematics.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills to interact with team members, clients, and vendors.
  • Physical fitness and ability to work in challenging environments and lift heavy equipment when necessary.
