Job Details

The Clinical Research Informatics (CRI) is a core group at SC CTSI that provides expertise and support for clinical research data integration, data sharing and data security to help drive the integration of clinical care and clinical research. CRI Program Director will oversee the day-to-day management of operations and administrative functions including planning, program evaluation, policy and technical implementation, personnel administration, budget, service promotion and proposal development. Contributes to design of program content, policies, and strategic planning efforts.
Minimum Education:
  • Bachelor's degree Computer Science, Health Science, Clinical Research, Bioinformatics, or other related field
  • Related graduate study Informatics, computer science, IT, or related field highly desired
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Req 7-10 years Leadership and management of a dept/unit in Health Information Data Management and/or providing informatics tools and services based on such data.
  • Req Providing informatics tools/services to academic researchers.
  • Pref Within an academic medical/healthcare environment.
  • Pref Implementing and managing clinical trials and research data warehouse.
  • Req Ability to communicate with diverse stakeholders at all levels with clarity, poise, maturity and precision both written and verbally; able to navigate in complex research organizations effectively.
  • Req Excellent time management; able to grasp new technologies, respond quickly to competing priorities and be comfortable with working with tight deadlines.
  • Req Exceptionally well-organized with demonstrated ability to prioritize and track multiple projects; and maintain well-organized, easily accessible, shared files.
  • Req Excellent problem-solving and critical-thinking skills; balancing strategic alignment with technology roadmap and emerging industry trends with practical delivery.
  • Req Excellent time management; able to grasp new technologies, respond quickly to competing priorities and be comfortable with working with tight deadlines.

Position Accountabilities:

70% - HDIP
  • Program Planning and Management - Plans and develops CRI objectives and content. Identify trends and research needs and establish priorities accordingly.
  • Develops and communicates CRI program to various internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop operating policies and processes to ensure effective, efficient, and secure use of data
  • Prepares long and short-range plans for applications selection, systems development, systems maintenance, production activities and for necessary support resources, coordinating area efforts with university-wide efforts.
  • Work closely with researchers, administration, compliance, IT and user groups in defining, prioritizing and executing applications and streamlined processes.
  • Serves as a key resource for program information. Resolves problems or questions referred by researchers and program and technical personnel at all levels
  • Conducts and participates in program evaluation. Prepares and present to leadership reports on program productivity and impact.
  • Develops strategies for marketing or promoting program to include needs assessment, promotion plans, networking, newsletters and publications or other communications materials, and events planning.
  • Plans and implements necessary controls and procedures to protect systems and data from modification, disclosure or destruction. Controls the integrity of data bases by monitoring incoming data and transactions.
  • Evaluates vendor proposals for purchases of hardware, software and technical services to assure adherence to specifications. Analyzes proposed projects for feasibility.
  • Ensures all information systems products meet standards and user requirements. Tests software and hardware and monitors and resolves problems.
  • Develops and implements security related procedures. Promotes and maintains standards for security conscious awareness and behavior. Maintains knowledge of university's crime prevention and suppression programs and services. Ensures dissemination of security related information to staff.
  • Plans and conducts quality assurance reviews and recommends changes as appropriate.
  • Develops and maintains automated or manual systems and procedures to facilitate program operations.
  • Ensures researchers are provided efficient tools and data in timely manner
  • Identify technical education opportunities to enhance user experience.
  • Advises leadership regarding Informatics systems requirements. Facilitates planning and directs the design, installation, modification, and operations of research information systems.
  • Reviews and prioritizes systems development requests. Prepares cost estimates for current and proposed projects, reflecting staff and equipment requirements.
  • Develops project specifications. Plans and coordinates project schedules and related activities. Directs coding, testing, installation, debugging and documentation of systems developments and/or enhancements. Plans and recommends changes to the capacity of the operating system or its configuration.
  • Leads Data Governance initiatives as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

10% - Finance and Management
  • Develops and manages program budgets and recommends or makes budgetary and resource allocations. Provides financial status reports as requested.
  • Staffing and Training – Directly or indirectly supervises all assigned subordinate staff. Recommends organizational structure, reporting relationships and staffing needs based on program goals.
  • Recruits, screens, hires and trains staff in accordance to University polices. Assesses need for technical and professional growth and recommends development opportunities.
  • Evaluates employee performance and provides guidance and feedback. Counsels and/or disciplines as needed.

20% - Research
  • Assists in writing of grant applications, IRB applications, publications, white papers, standards, SOPs and presentations.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders on new initiatives and service opportunities. Participates in CTSA consortium activities
  • Service Delivery – Manages the delivery of CRI services to targeted researchers. Sets and communicates program priorities and performance standards and assesses operations using these criteria.
  • Ensure stakeholder and researcher needs are met with the highest quality customer service and user training.
  • Other duties as assigned.
